Is our information about liposuction TRUE?

When it comes to aesthetic surgery, one of the terms that comes to mind most in the society is Liposuction (fat removal). So much so that in the latest research conducted in America, where we are based on many statistics, it is at the top of aesthetic surgical interventions regardless of men and women.

Overweight is a medical problem that will live arm in arm with mankind forever. Nowadays, when the ready-made food market appeals to the food demands of the busy working population, when stress and inactivity are added to the work, we are faced with a human community that is drowned in the circle of diseases caused by being overweight and overweight and looking for a way of escape. Since the 1980s, Liposuction has been a way out for people who have not been able to introduce healthy nutrition and exercise into their lives and for people who have aesthetic concerns due to being in front of the public.

Those who fall into the mistake of “You have gained my weight, you can immediately go and get your fat removed and regain your old form” or those who ignore this fact despite being told that this is wrong have both made themselves unhappy and caused this surgical intervention, which is a really excellent procedure when performed with the right indication, to be misrecognised by some people.

What is liposuction NOT?

Weight loss procedure
Collecting skin and abdominal wall sagging that accompanies regional adiposity in people who gain and lose weight frequently, women who give birth and people over middle age (Stretch marks on the skin are the most important signs of loss of elasticity in the skin).
Getting rid of cellulite
Never gain weight again, no matter what you eat
Butt lift

What does liposuction do then?

To remove fat accumulations that cause regional deformity (such as belly, hip sides, inner knees, kidney area in men) in adults with normal weight for their height
To treat breast enlargement called gynaecomastia seen in men
To provide better shaping of the area in neck lift, tummy tuck and breast reduction surgeries

For which areas can liposuction be applied?

The most common areas where liposuction is applied:

Abdomen and waist circumference
Hips
Inner and outer side of the thigh
Faces of the knees facing each other
Neck
Upper arm
Breast (Male and female)

Less preferred areas:

Parts of the legs below the knee (It should be done with special thin cannulas. It is especially preferred in cases of lipoedema).
Gluteal region (buttocks) (Since the raised and plump appearance of the gluteal region may be negatively affected, it is preferred in cases of asymmetry and cases complaining of excessive protrusion of the gluteal region).

Liposuction and MEN

The number of men having plastic surgery in Turkey is gradually increasing. Liposuction is the second most common aesthetic surgery performed by men after aesthetic nose surgery.

The most common liposuction areas:

The most common regional fat in men is around the belly button in the abdomen and on both sides of the waist called the flank.
Jinecomastia is a large male breast. Developmental, hormonal factors or medications used may be a factor. After the underlying disease is treated, the mammary gland tissue is surgically removed and the fatty tissue of the breast is removed by liposuction.

Since male skin is thicker than female skin, postoperative skin adaptation is better in men and skin corrugation is less likely to occur.

Is Liposuction Risky?

Liposuction is not included in the group of risky surgeries when it is performed on young patients (under 60 years of age) with a weight close to normal without general health problems (heart, diabetes, other chronic diseases …). The news in the press about cases of fat embolism after liposuction resulting in death are usually about overweight patients, patients with concomitant chronic diseases, or sad situations encountered as a result of inadequate preoperative and postoperative precautions.

Complications that can be encountered in all surgeries:

Complications related to anaesthesia (drug allergy…)
Bleeding, haematoma (subcutaneous blood accumulation)
Infection
Systemic complications that can be seen in patients with chronic heart and lung diseases and diabetics
Embolism (fat embolism is the most common complication of long bone fractures)

Complications that can be seen mostly after liposuction surgery:

Corrugation on the skin surface (It is tried to be prevented with various massage methods started 3 weeks after surgery).
Skin loosening due to insufficient adaptation of the skin (It is a condition observed in the abdominal area, especially in postmenopausal women and women who have given birth. At the earliest 6 months after liposuction, it is possible to achieve a more aesthetic appearance by performing surgeries called tummy tuck and thigh lift surgeries in which the skin is surgically removed along with the fat).
Skin loss (It is a rare complication. Especially in patients who smoke, it is necessary to be very careful during liposuction of the neck area).
Superficial sensory loss (It is usually temporary.)
Skin burn (It is a rare complication that may occur due to the heat generated in the liposuction process performed with ultrasound energy).
Perforation of the abdominal wall (It may occur during the liposuction process of the abdominal region, especially in women who have given birth a lot, in patients with hernia. Preoperative diagnosis of such patients is very important).

You can easily find detailed information about liposuction with a little research on the internet. When you read most sources carefully, you will see that the points we mentioned above are mentioned in various parts of the article. But for some reason, human beings sometimes see only what they want to see.
